Today marks the official opening of the summer climbing season in the mountains surrounding Furano. To kick it off, Furano Tourism arranges treks for enthusiasts, complete with transportation, guides, and a woody souvenir.

The Furano area has an abundance of wonderful, scenic hiking trails. Difficulty ranges from the casual stroll to quite rugged and challenging. The bonus for hikers comes from the relatively low elevation of our mountains, so there is more oxygen for your enjoyment. However, don't underestimate the 2,000 meter elevation. These are legitimate mountains, rising up quickly from a base elevation of 200 meters. The entire Tokachi ridge and Mt. Asahidake are very exposed and rugged, and hikers should be in full "mountain mode" when making their climbing decisions. When the weather turns bad up there, it can very severe indeed.

See you in Furano.
