Furano is derived from the Ainu "Furanui" (fuuranui means having an odor). It is said that the sulfuric smell travels down from Mt. Iou (Tokachidake Mountain Range) which is upstream on the Furano River, thus giving the area its name.

Furano is an inland basin located right in the center of Hokkaido, with the Tokachidake Mountain Range which is a part of Daisetsuzan Mountain Range National Park to the east, and the Ashibetsudake Mountains and Yubari Mountains to the west. The city, blessed with rich nature, is located on vast land at the confluence of the Sorachi River, a tributary of the Ishikari River, and Furano River. Its coordinates are 43 degrees North Latitude, and 142 degrees East Longitude, 32.8 km from east to west, and 27.3km north to south, with an area of approximately 600.73 square kilometers.

Ordinarily, Furano gets its first snowfall between late October and early November. Tokachidake and Asahidake mountains get their first snowfall sometimes in August. By the end of November the snow is continuous, and the ski areas in Furano are scheduled to open around this time. Be sure and take care to dress warm, and be careful driving so you can enjoy winter in Furano.

The four seasons in Furano are very distinguished, and the difference between temperature is drastic; it may get as low as minus 30 Celsius during winter while it can rise well into the 30's during summer. Spring (April - mid June) is warm and comfortable, however the evenings and mornings may get chilly so we suggest you bring long-sleeved shirts and jackets. It has actually snowed in June in the past. Summer (mid June - July) for Furano which is a basin, becomes rather hot, and many hot summer days may continue with the temperature well over 30 degrees, but usually it is a mild 25 degrees. However, mornings and evenings get a little cool due to the drastic change in temperature. T-shirts and sandals may be okay during the day, but at night or when you go out in poor weather, it is wise to have a long-sleeved cardigan or fleece jacket. Autumn, (August - October) while Honshu is still going through heat spells, leaves begin to change color in some areas of Hokkaido. Even in August, there are some areas where stoves become necessary, so be sure to bring long-sleeved clothing. On days when the weather is poor the temperature is known to drop down to 10 degrees. In Winter, (November - March) Furano, which is known as a ski town, can get as cold as minus 30 degrees Celsius because of its inland climate. Gloves, scarves, and hats that cover ears are essential gear. It is also helpful to buy non-slip grips for the backs of your shoes. You will find these at shoe stores, supermarkets and convenience stores in Furano. Be sure and gets some to protect against slipping on the ice and injuring yourself.

There is the "Highland Furano", a natural hot spring inside of Furano where you can enjoy a day trip to the bath. Take Route 38 toward Mikasa, and it is about 15 minutes by car from JR Furano Station. There are lavender fields next to the facility where you can enjoy basking in forest air, take a hike on one of the 3 trekking courses, barbeque and stay the night with the family or with friends. There is also Shisai-no-Yu hot springs located inside of New Furano Prince Hotel. This hot spring may also be accessed even if you are not a hotel guest. Hot water is poured upon mineral ore to bring out the mineral components in the "Koumeiseki Hot Spring", or there is the "Tron Hot Spring" which can be enjoyed in the large public bath. Lodging is also available. If you drive about 40 min. out of Furano there is the Fukiage Outdoor Spring, part of the Tokachidake Hot Springs, which is 100% natural and is tucked away in the forest. It is a hot spring that appeared in the drama series "From the Northern Country", and is full of rustic atmosphere. (No changing rooms, mixed bathing) This Fukiage Outdoor Bath we recommend is loved by locals and visitors alike.

Approximately 41 km toward Obihiro from Furano Station, there is a road station along Route 38 called Road Station Minami Furano.（0167-52-2955） If you go 33 km toward Asahikawa from Furano Station, the Road Station Biei Tourist Information Centre is located right next to Biei Station. （0166-92-0920）　　
If you go 48 km toward Hidaka from Furano, the Road Station "Shizen Taiken Shimukappu"is located along Route 237. （0167-56-2174） Inside Furano, the Furano Marche is located on Route 38, which has a Produce Center, agricultural product stand, Information, sweets cafes and food court. （0167-22-1001）

There are patchwork fields and hills in Biei that often appear in commercials. Drive 30 km out of Furano, (about 30 - 40 min. by car) toward Asahikawa on Route 237, and along the panoramic road you will find the Shikisai-no-Oka, The Tree of Philosophy, San-ai-no-Oka, Christmas Tree and Shin-ei-no-Oka hills. Along the road through the patchwork fields is the Hokusei-no-Oka Observatory, Seven Stars' Tree, Ken and Mary Tree and Parent and Child Trees scattered across the fields. There are changing tables located at JR Furano Station, the library and Furatto (Indoor Swimming Pool & Gym) There are also changing tables and nursing rooms located inside of supermarkets, public facilities and restaurants.

During the summer tourist season, the Twinkle Bus, a reserved loop bus is offered exclusively to JR users. The "Kururu Bus" makes a loop around the various sightseeing spots within Furano and returns back to Furano Station. It is a convenient bus where you can ride as much as you like, and get off where you like to freely explore the sites and create "your own travel plan." There are five. Next to JR Furano Station you will find Furano Biei Tourism Centre. Furano Tourism Association is located on the street level of the Furano Ski Resort Kitanomine Gondola Building. It is located central to many lodging facilities, so stop by and make plans for your sightseeing. Both are open all year long from 9am - 6pm. Besides these, there is one in Gakuden, 2F of Furano Grape Juice Factory open from 9am - 5pm (summer only), Rokugo Recycled Houses from TV Drama "From the Northern Country" Information Centre open from 9am - 5pm (closed Mondays & Wednesdays in winter), Rokugo Goro's Stone House Information Centre open from 9am - 5:30pm (summer only). There are so many sights to see in Furano which are completely enveloped in rich nature. Its location at the foot of the Daisetsuzan Mountain Range Tokachidake and Yubari Mountain Range Ashibetsudake gives it pastoral scenery filled with lavender and other colorful fields of flowers. It is also blessed with delicious foods such as curry, wine cheese, vegetable dishes and sweets. There is fun indoor and outdoor, not to mention various spots that were used in filming TV series and movies, so there is plenty to see. During winter there is skiing, hot springs and many other outdoor activities to enjoy while you take in the winter scenery. During summer there are tour buses and circular buses, rental cycles, rental cars, and sightseeing taxis for your convenience.

The Twinkle Bus is exclusive to JR users. Tickets can be purchased at all major JR Hokkaido Ticket Counters (Midori-no-Madoguchi), Twinkle Plazas and major travel agencies in Hokkaido. (Limit on passengers) Twinkle Bus for Furano can be boarded at the No. 1 bus stop in front of Furano Station.

Furano has a population of around 24,000 friendly and easy going folk.

Furano is primarily a small rural town based around farming and tourism. The main tourism is during the summer flower season and during the lavender season. The ski season also sees Japanese travel from around the country to ski this famous hill and also an influx of international skiers to experience the incredible snow and culture.
The main agricultural products are potato, melon, onion and carrots.

Furano is small enough that you can easily get around by foot and by taxi if you want to go downtown. In summer you can ride a bike around which you can hire in town.

Furano is famous for the food it serves and most of this food is grown and produced in Furano. This means that the food is fresh and healthy with local vegetables, dairy products, meats and poultry along with seafood trucked in from the coast just over 2 hours away. Restaurants prepare the meals using these ingredients with an amazing variety with everything from curries to pastas, to pizzas to hot pots, to sushi to lamb and beef BBQs, to noodle bars and just about anything else you can think about. You can withdraw money in Furano using an international card at any 7-Eleven Convenience Store (Exception: Master Card) in Furano or at the Furano Post Office. These ATMs have English commands and are simple to use. There is a 7-Eleven in the Kitanomine Area as well as in town. The Central Post Office is downtown 1.5km from the base of the ski area.

There are a number of cafes and government buildings in Furano where you can use the internet. Some hotels and lodges have internet terminals available. Yes. You can use email at some of the hotels and at some of the internet cafes around Furano. To call home it is best to buy a phone card from the internet or to directly call from your hotel or pension. Please be aware of the approximate costs of the call before calling to avoid any unexpected large bills.

One of the beauties of Furano is that just about every style of accommodation is available.
You can choose to stay in a hotel with Western features or a Japanese style hotel which might be just as comfortable but also have more of a traditional feel.
Traditional onsen (hot spring) accommodation also exists where guests are sure to return home with amazing stories and memories of their stay.
There are a variety of pensions (family run lodges), Minshiku and Ryokan (traditional Japanese style lodging), cottages, back packers inns and a camp site. Each on of these has its own charm and own beauty.

This depends on many factors. In winter, most guests choose to stay in Kitanomine or in the New Furano Prince Hotel. You can however stay in a beautiful hotel such as Orika or one of the other pensions away from the hill and get a shuttle bus each day.
There are even isolated pensions where you can enjoy your trip and have a very original experience and some traditional onsen (hot spring) hotels and lodges in the mountains such as around Tokachidake.
Some pensions and hotels are difficult to access if you do not have a car but this should not discourage you. Many hotels and pensions offer pick up services from the station and will drop you back when you wish to return.
There are some spectacular areas with pensions and B & Bs located in picture postcard scenes with friendly accommodating owners. Downtown offers the convenience of easy access and a great choice of shops and restaurants. Kitanomine has a number of restaurants and bars and is only 3km from downtown.

Taxis are not too expensive in Furano because there is not much traffic and most things are quite close. Flag fall for a taxi in Furano is about 600 YEN. Flag rates differ throughout Japan. You should be able to get anywhere around town for around 1,000YEN.

It is not expensive to eat out in Furano. It would generally be cheaper to go out for dinner than to cook a similar meal at your lodging. If you cook at your lodgings, you run the risk of missing out on the culinary delights of Furano and the chance to experience some fantastic restaurants and bars loaded with delicious food and amazing culture.
A simple meal of a bowl a noodles (ramen), costs around 600 - 800 YEN.
A main meal for 1, be it pasta, curry, fish or meat will generally cost around 800 - 1,200 YEN.
A large Japanese style banquet meal, usually at a restaurant called an Izakaya where you order a number of small meals generally costs around 1,500 - 2,500 YEN.

Despite being a small town there is a lot to do in Furano and the surrounding areas. At anytime of the year you should spend at very least a few days in Furano to experience, see and do just a small part of what there is on offer here. You can also do a number of day trips from Furano whilst using Furano as a comfortable base for your journeys. Many guests stay for weeks during the winter, skiing during the day and enjoying the local culture during the afternoons and evenings.
Summer guests often stay in the area, exploring by bike or hiking around the local mountains between viewing the flower farms and experiencing Furano hospitality for extended holidays.

You can get almost anything you like in Furano. Being a small town, Furano is self sufficient with almost all services and shops.

Every season provides a completely different experience. The 4 distinct seasons in Furano change the scenery and the feel of the town constantly. Your lodging or hotel should have maps and guide books on the area for you when you arrive at your hotel. There is an information centre in Furano all year located across from Furano JR Station. During the summer months a large Information Centre operates next to the station providing guests with all their information needs. You can use free internet provided here and also get assistance booking accommodation and transport.

At the foot of the Daisetsuzan Mountain Range Tokachidake and Yubari Mountain Range Ashibetsudake, where Sorachi River, a tributary of Ishikari River and Furano River meet, is the city of Furano. This city, embraced by grand nature, is home to many sightseeing spots. During the summer there are lavender fields that turn the hills purple, and other fields of colorful flowers. The climate and diverse temperature allow for delicious agricultural products to grow, not to mention contributes to a gorgeous pastoral landscape. There are many hands-on activities to try such as harvesting and outdoor fun. Winter provides breathtaking views of Tokachidake mountains while skiing. Besides outdoor fun there are plenty of hands-on crafts to do indoors and of course hot springs to enjoy. Because it is blessed with fresh produce, wines, cheeses, curry and sweets are just some of the foods you want to try. The location for the TV drama series "From The Northern Country" is in Rokugo district, about 30 min. by car from Furano. Hours are as follows;

There are [From the Northern Country] stamp pads set up at JR Furano Station, From the Northern Country TV Drama Museum, Kumagera (restaurant), and Asamitsu (work apparel store). In the Rokugo district there are stamp pads at Recycled Houses from TV Drama "From the Northern Country", Rokugo Forest, Goro's Stone House and the first house, Onoda Soba shop, and Nakahata Lumber Office. Besides these, there is one in Nakanosawa Primary School, Nunobe Station, and Furano Drama House (New Furano Prince Hotel).

You can enjoy lavender-flavoured soft-serve ice cream while you look at the gardens at Farm Tomita, Saika-no-Sato, Choei Lavender Garden in Nakafurano, or at the Naturlux Hotel near Furano Station.

Because Furano is an inland basin surrounded by mountains with an inland climate and diverse temperatures, high quality agricultural products can be grown. For this reason, all the ingredients necessary for curry making grow in abundance here to make great curry. Onoda Soba (Rokugo Town 3 0167-29-2662) is a well established business serving soba for over 30 years. Keiko chan no mise soba stall (within the enclosure of JR Furano Staion)

Every year on July 28th and 29th this festival is held in the shopping arcade of Furano city. Because Furano is located right smack in the middle of Hokkaido, it is often referred to as the "Heso", or "belly button" of Hokkaido, which is where the festival gets its name. The main event of the festival is to draw faces on your stomach and parade down the streets! It is interesting to see the different faces on people's bellies. This festival which began in 1969 has come to be known outside of Hokkaido as well.

Furano spring begins with the [Yamabe Sakura Festival], mountains are opened for the season, GREAT EARTH FURANO Ride and Biei Healthy Marathon take place. Summer: Furano Bellybutton Festival, Minami Furano [Lake water Festival], Nakafurano [Lavender Festival], Kamifurano [Shikisai Festival], Biei [Nachi Himatsuri Festival]. Fall: Furano [Furano Wine Festival], [Cheese Festival], Minamifurano [Road Station Thanksgiving], Kamifurano [Tokachi Fall Foliage Campaign Ton Ton Festival], Nakafurano [Rice Festival], Shimukappu [Fall Foliage Festival], Biei [Century Ride] and other festivals are held. Mid July to late July is the best season for lavender. There are four types of lavender you can see in Furano, beginning with the early blossoming kind in June. Rokugo Observatory, higher in altitude grows a late blooming variety of lavender which can be viewed well into early August. Most lavender is cut down in August to prepare for the following year, so you may not be able to see it in August. Click here to find out the anthesis situation for lavender at each location. Sunflowers are in bloom between July and October. Flower gardens featuring mainly sunflowers can be found in Biei at the Zerubu-no-Oka along Route 237, and at Shikisai-no-Oka on the Panorama Road, also at the Flower Land in Kamifurano. Farms in Furano grow sunflowers to use as fertilizers for the fields. Because they are not planted for sightseeing, they do not necessarily bloom in the same place each year. Be sure to enjoy the sunflowers you happen to come upon without disturbing the farmers.

Potatoes are a local produce grown between Furano and Biei. The area is nothing but undulating hills where many varieties of potato fields can be seen. In Hokkaido they are planted in early May and begin to put out soft purple and white flowers according to variety between late June and early July. Some rare varieties put out pink flowers. In the fall these turn into delicious potatoes that appear on the dinner table. This beautiful scenery is made possible by the farmers who take care of the fields daily to grow the potatoes. Please refrain from entering the fields so as to protect this beautiful scenery forever.

Route 237 from Asahikawa to Furano and Shimukappu is nicknamed "Hanabito Road." All along the highway there are many flower fields which create a brilliant floral landscape with each season and is a highly popular spot. As you go south from Asahikawa you get to Higashi Kagura (Asahikawa Airport)->Biei->Kamifurano->Nakafurano->Furano City->Minamifurano and Shimukappu.

The changing of foliage in Japan begins in Daisetsuzan. Leaves begin to change into yellow, red and green brocade as early as late August or early September. Leaves change in the Tokachi Mountain Range area just an hour out by car from Furano mid September to late, and early October in Furano City and Rokugo district. Also, in November, the Japanese Larch begins to change color as well. When the Larches begin to change to a yellow color, the larch forests shine golden in the morning or evening sun with the snow-capped Daisetsuzan as backdrop. You can enjoy fall foliage twice in Furano.

The first ten days of May are usually when cherry blossoms can be viewed. The most popular spots for cherry blossom viewing in Furano are the University of Tokyo Forests (Yamabe), Rokugo Road (Nunobe), and Asahigaoka Park (Kitanomine). Cherry trees in Hokkaido differ from those in Honshu, blossoms appear at the same time as the leaves. During this season, many other dainty flowers including alpine plants all bloom at once (dogtooth violets, far East Amur adonis, corydalis ambigua, skunk cabbages, Eastern skunk cabbages and wind flowers) at the first hint of spring after a long and harsh winter.
You can view these flowers even around residential housing areas.

Rental cars: it takes about 2 to 2 and a half hours by car. From Chitose you can get on the expressway at Chitose IC to Sapporo and Asahikawa, get off at Mikasa IC and take Route116 to Route 452 to Route135 then to Route 38. Or you can get on at Chitose IC Sapporo bound and from Chitose Eniwa get onto DOTO EXPRESSWAY and get off at Shimukappu IC then take Route 273 to Route 38. There is not a JR station at the airport, so the best way is to take the Furano Bus [Lavender gou] from Asahikawa. There are 8 buses in service per day, but not necessarily scheduled in time with the departure and arrival of flights, so be sure to allow for plenty of time. Access to the scenic spots in Furano and surrounding area is not very good during the low season, so actually we suggest renting a car. As soon as the snow flurries begin to fall in November, all rental car tires are changed to winter tires for safe winter driving. However, the weather and road conditions are unstable at the beginning and end of winter so please take extra caution when driving. Although it may appear that there is no snow on the road, it may be frozen and slick, or some of the fallen snow may melt a little and become slushy and slippery, grabbing the steering wheel at times. Driving early in the morning, late at night, especially through high altitude passes require extra caution. Remember to always be extremely careful when driving on new terrain no matter what the condition.

In order to get around Furano conveniently, of course a car is great, but during summer there are many tour buses and circular buses that tour each scenic spot. There are reserved buses exclusive to JR users, or circular buses that stop at each of the major scenic spots where you can get on and off at will to sightsee. If you really want to feel nature, you can rent a bicycle(electronic, mountain bikes or scooters) or rent a car or hire a taxi according to your travel plans. In order to fully enjoy Furano it is essential to confirm or make reservations for various transportation in advance according to your desired destination. Furano Jam Garden is located about 19 km from JR Furano Station. It will take about 30 min. by car. Take Route 38 from JR Furano Station for Obihiro, you will find the Anpanman Shop sign, so you head onto Route 544. Go along the single road which runs beside a stream to the end of the road.

The location for the TV drama series [From the Northern Country] is in the Rokugo district 20 km from Furano Station. By car: take Route 38 toward Obihiro until you find the turn off sign for [Rokugo] then take Route 544. Free parking is available with signs along Route 544.
By Bus: Take the [Rokugo Line] and get off at the end. Biei chou Shirogane About 18 km from JR Biei Station and about 25 min. by car. Drive from Biei city toward Shirogane Hot Springs and on the left side you will find the turn off sign for the Blue Pond. By Bus: Take the bus to Shirogane Hot Springs from Biei Station and get off at the Blue Pond Iriguchi (entrance) stop. It is just 4 minutes on foot from Furano Station, along Go Jou Ave. across from Asahikawa Shinkin Bank. It is a retro cabin-like building.

There are many ways to get to Furano. You can use JR, buses, rental cars, or a private transfer. Driving in winter can be difficult and stressful and with Japanese public transportation generally running on time it is probably easier to catch public transport to Furano.
In summer, many trains and tour buses run to and from Furano making it a very easy destination to get to. Traffic coming into Furano from Sapporo and getting around Furano during the lavender season can be very heavy so please allow time for this inconvenience. Please check our Access Page.
