New School & Business Year
April 1 is no joke in Japan. Instead, it is the beginning of the new school and business year for everyone. Students start new grades in April. New company employees all start on April 1, with large formal welcoming ceremonies, and everyone looking very spiffy in their new suits or company uniforms.
So Happy New Year...of sorts.
