The beloved Noroko sightseeing train is being retired next month after 28 years of service. Renowned for plying the scenic route between Furano and Biei at a leisurely pace in open-air cars, it's long been a staple of the summer season here. Don't worry, a newer train will take its place next year.

As part of the winding down, JR Hokkaido is holding special events at several stations along the route. Hokkaido TV was riding the train with a camera and reporter to cover the action. There is a strong train culture in Japan, and thousands of certified train buffs who can tell you anything you'd ever want to know about whatever train you happen to query about. Today, nearly the entire train was full of train nuts thrilled to be riding the antique, and having ample opportunity to photograph the train. The weather cooperated, and it was wonderfully sunny today, allowing great pics of the very colorful train. The conductors were even wearing special shirts created for the occasion. See you in Furano.
