Got Onions?
WE DO!!
Recent visitors to Furano have certainly seen the onion harvest in full swing. It's everywhere. They may wonder, "Do they grow a lot of onions around here?"
And the answer is a resounding, YES! The Furano area is ranked #2 in Japan in terms of onion production. We raise about 100,000 TONS of onions every year, or roughly 10% of all domestic production. One in ten onions in Japan comes from Furano. That's a lot of onions.
Note the large basket cages in the photos. Each one holds about 500 kg, or roughly 10,000 onions. Do some math, and that means we fill about 200,000 of those cages every season. Do some more math, and that yields approximately 2 BILLION total onions. That, as they say, is A LOT of onions. Or as I like to say, Mucho Onions!
You've certainly heard of corn chips, and potato chips. Well, in Furano you can buy onion chips! You should try them.
Got onions? See you in Furano.
